November 28th, 2006 ojo por ojo, diente por diente

wanted to use that heading before I went and saw “The Prestige” by Jonathan and Christopher Nolan. (actually, by Christopher Priest but I haven’t read the book; don’t have time for novels these days.) Am very glutinous, attending a movie on a Saturday night when the first of my exams is tomorrow and the others are just two weeks away. TWO WEEKS! Birthday celebrations….. more of the same? Was chatting with the fabulous Ms. Sue Kempson and she assured me: 1) the first exam is easy b/c it’s open book, 2) we’re all faded in the 11-week mark, and 3) she’s confident I’ll slam in a home run. Perhaps I’ve read into what she was saying a bit. Personally, I would have to say I dropped back a few weeks ago. Probably at least a month, maybe more. Am pushing forward again but definitely have neither maintained my competitive edge nor my place in the pack. It’s okay. I never was alpha dog. My task these next few weeks is simply to apply painstaking attention to detail. If I can master my 10 enzymes, then I can master the PA/Pa, and I can master the haemolymphatics, so I can definitely master the spot exam.

Rapidly approaching next year’s resolution: always do your best. :)

November 17th, 2006 New Studies Show Vet Students May Suffer From Stress

You don’t say!?

We had a class in this earlier in the week. Attendance was poor (typical for “Personal and Professional Development” classes) but the description was EVERYONE in our class. If we’re this stressed out midway (nearly through actually) the first semester, what will we be like at the end of the fifth year?? Jeepers! Personally, I’ve been having parasite nightmares and other wake me up in the middle of the night for no reason but to make sure I only get 3 1/2 hours of sleep a night type dreams. It’s not like I have a hard enough time falling asleep to begin with (my room is too cold for me and the central heating gets shut down at 12p; WAY too early in my opinion!) but as I say, I’m so by far not the only one of us in this boat.

Had a most amazing lecture presentation this morning (”Examination Of…”) wrapping up the lessons in The Alimentary System. One of those classes that puts you back on track for why you are studying this information. Ah, yes. Some of you have been asking, what exactly has been covered to date? So here’s the quick list of systems we’ve learned since Sept.

“Core Topics”
(Histology)
Anatomy
Integument
Haemolymphatic
Intro to Nervous system
Endocrine
Immunology
Urinary
Cardio / Respiratory
Alimentary

also,
Parasitology
Epidemiology
Statistics

Oh, and Metabolism (which could be part of Alimentary but is biochem and kicking my ass.) So - not that I know it all but that is what I’ve looked at.

ETC. But that gives you a basic idea.

Off to study. Tah!

November 13th, 2006 Eeeek!

Have mice. Need cat but am battling with the flatmate(s?) over my baby bird adoption. Grr.
