reflections
August 16th, 2006 Dick Vets

We’re a rowdy lot (the new Dick Vets - GEP ‘10 class. Our teachers have been more than just overwhelmed by the numbers of us, and rapidity with which the course needed to be redesigned; they are also overwhelmed by our American-ness: our tendancy to ask questions constantly every step of the way, to raise our hands (or shout out) “I have a question” and then ask the same set of questions six or seven times. Our Animal Body instructor, snarky Dr. Argyle who I rather like but observe not addressing me since I “taught” over him on the whole Human Genome Project question/clarification Monday, felt we had to be told that information will not be spoon-fed as the operating assumption is since we all have a previous degree in Sciences we know the materials more or less and can figure out how to fill in the gaps on our own. Hooboy. I suppose that is or should be true, and definitely is reflective of our future career requirements, and in general will prove fine since they are teaching principally through overview followed by clinicals and practicals - which is amazing - but it still leaves me seriously wishing I had made it through more of the Anatomy & Physiology review I’d started back in March or April. Here it is August and I’m still looking at the same courses. Ha. I say that as if I won’t be looking at the same courses for the next 4 years. But really, the computer and people I love out in the world at large threaten to distract me for innumerable hours (as has been true for some years now) and my apoptosis lesson remains 1/2 finished. Looms even.

It was a pretty easy day for Group 1 (which includes me) (thankfully as it followed a personally pretty crazy one yesterday.) Got to learn how to write a professional farm budget to estimate profitability (a lesson that will DEFINITELY be applied to my personal finances ASAP) followed by more Nutrition (with loveable curmudgeony “Uncle Cuddles”) and rounded out by our Animal Husbandry horse practical. The more I’m around them, the more I really love the horses. This is Velvet. She has feathers on her feet which you can’t see b/c she’s in the stall and all but Isn’t she gorgeous?

This should be a slideshow…. hopefully the gallery is working?
