January 29th, 2006 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Eileen, Jen and I drove down to Garden Grove to meet up with Pauline and her friends for the Tet Festival (Vietnamese New Year celebration). After the fair, we went to eat yummy Pho and then finished the night with a visit to the Buddhist Temple where we got our good luck coins in red envelopes, burned prayer incense, and got our fortunes (I took Sô 27 - Què Thái Bình but then was told we were supposed to shake the sticks in order to get our number. So I shook the sticks and got #19, and put it away before looking for the letter which you are ALSO supposed to get because each number has four possible outcomes? I don’t know what all that means. Too confusing. oh well - I like my fortune and I’m sticking to it.) Excellent good times.

In keeping with it being the year of the dog, 4703… more haiku! This batch from Doogie Clark in 2001. (Thanks Liz!)

Dog Haiku

I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You will ever be.

Today I sniffed
Many dog behinds — I celebrate
By kissing your face.

I sound the alarm!
Paper boy — come to kill us all
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I sound the alarm!
Garbage man — come to kill us all
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

How do I love thee?
The ways are as numberless as
My hairs on the rug.

My human is home!
I am so ecstatic I have
Made a puddle.

I Hate my choke chain
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack!
Ack! Ack! Ack! Ack! Ack!

Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot — no greater bliss — well,
Maybe catching rats

Look in my eyes and
Deny it. No human could
Love you as much as I do.

The cat is not all
Bad –she fills the litter box
With tootsie rolls.

Dig under the fence–why?
Because it is there. Because it’s
There. Because it’s there.

I am your best friend,
Now, always, and especially
When you are eating.
